Consistency Beats Brilliance

Organizations naturally celebrate exceptional performance.

The big win. The creative solution. The person who steps in and saves the day.

Those moments matter.

But they aren't what sustainable performance is built on.

I've found that strong organizations are usually distinguished by something much less dramatic: they consistently do the important things well.

Commitments are kept.

Problems are addressed before they become crises.

People understand what is expected of them.

Processes work without requiring extraordinary effort to hold them together.

And results don't depend on someone repeatedly saving the day.

Brilliance can produce an exceptional result.

Consistency creates an organization capable of producing good results again and again.

The goal shouldn't be to eliminate exceptional performance.

It should be to build an organization that doesn't depend on it.
