Preparing a Business for Sale
A business is rarely made ready for sale by the decision to sell it.
The preparation usually begins years earlier.
Reliable financial information. Clear customer relationships. Documented processes. A capable leadership team. Fewer questions that depend on one owner being available to answer them.
Those things improve the business whether a transaction occurs or not.
They make the company easier to manage, easier to evaluate, and easier for someone else to trust.
Owners sometimes wait until an offer is on the table to begin organizing the business for a buyer.
By then, the work is harder, the pressure is greater, and the buyer has more reason to question what is missing.
A better question is:
If someone needed to understand how this business operates without me in the room, could they?
The answer says a great deal about both the company’s value and its readiness for whatever comes next.
